Conventional disinfectants, sanitizers and other antimicrobials are designed to eliminate or inhibit the growth of microorganisms that are alive and present on a specific surface at the time of their application. Such products accomplish these antimicrobial feats by bathing a target surface with toxic chemicals, essentially poisoning whatever microorganisms may currently exist on it.

Due to their toxicity, and to reduce the possibility of also harming people, pets and surfaces, these products are required to act quickly, and then promptly evaporate. Note however, that as soon as they disappear, so does their antimicrobial properties. While these products are generally quite effective at eliminating microorganisms, they’re equally ineffective at keeping them away.

Unlike more traditional antimicrobial products, SHIELD utilizes "Surface Modifying Antimicrobial Technology” instead of toxic chemicals to control microbes.
